Call to Worship | God Gathers His Church

– Come and Sing

Welcome, Scripture Reading, and Prayers – (from Psalm 136 ESV)

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who alone does great wonders,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who by understanding made the heavens,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever…
to him who made the great lights,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever…
to him who…brought Israel out from [Egypt],
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who divided the Red Sea in two,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever…
to him who struck down great kings,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever…
It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
and rescued us from our foes,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever;
he who gives food to all flesh,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of heaven,
                  for his steadfast love endures forever.

Den gracias al Señor, porque él es bueno;
                   su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Den gracias al Dios de dioses;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Den gracias al Señor omnipotente;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al único que hace grandes maravillas;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que con inteligencia hizo los cielos;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que hizo las grandes luminarias;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que sacó de Egipto a Israel;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Con mano poderosa y con brazo extendido;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que partió en dos el Mar Rojo;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Y por en medio hizo cruzar a Israel;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que hirió de muerte a grandes reyes;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que a reyes poderosos les quitó la vida;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que nunca nos olvida, aunque estemos humillados;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que nos libra de nuestros adversarios;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
Al que alimenta a todo ser viviente;
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.
¡Den gracias al Dios de los cielos!
                  su gran amor perdura para siempre.

Confession of Sins | God Forgives His People

 M: Brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, let us draw near and humbly confess our sins to God.

C:  If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – (1 John 1:6-9 ESV)

M: Hear what our Lord Jesus says, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” – (Matthew 22:37-39 ESV)

C: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent, for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon / Seguridad de Perdón –

M: According to the promises of the new covenant, God will be merciful toward your iniquities and remember your sins no more. Stand and lift up your hearts in worship, trusting that it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all our sins.

Consecration | God Equips His Church

Scripture Reading and Prayer – Genesis 22:1-18

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”

Collect: O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people; Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Sermon: How Can This Be? – Bo Cogbill (John 3:16-21 ESV)

“For in this way God loved the world, such that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Confession of Faith

Congregation Reads – The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father,
Almighty Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into death;
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy *catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Communion Meditation and Prayer — The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever.

Padre nuestro que estás en el cielo,
santificado sea tu nombre.
Venga tu reino;
mas líbranos del mal;

Offerings and Thanksgiving / Ofrendas e Acción de Gracias — 1 John/Juan 3:16-18

By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

– As You Go

Commission | God Sends His Church — (Numbers 6:24-26; John 13:34-35 ESV)

Benediction: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Just as Christ has loved you, you also love one another. By this all people will know that you are His disciples, if you have love for one another.”
