Come and See

We can summarize John 1:35-51 in this way.

In this story the Word-made-flesh seeks and finds a few men to follow him. He takes them by the hand and, in the spirit of the prophets, says,

“Come, let us go up to the house of God, that I may teach you my ways and that you may walk in my paths. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD.” (Isaiah 2:3, 5)

And they come and see many great things:

Jesus is the Glory of God in the flesh who tabernacled among them. (John 1:1-4, 14-18)

Jesus is the Ladder who links heavens and earth together. (John 1:51; cp Gen 28:12)

Jesus is the Gate of Heaven who welcomes them into his Presence. (John 1:51; 10:7; cp Gen 28:17)

Jesus is the House of God who prepares a dwelling-place for them in him. (John 1:14, 51; 14:2-4 cp Gen 28:17)

Jesus is the Son of Man who triumphantly rides on the clouds, proclaiming victory over his enemies. (John 1:51; Daniel 7:13-14)
